Understanding how the early stages of sexual signal diversification proceed is critically important because these microevolutionary dynamics directly shape species trajectories and impact macroevolutionary patterns. Unfortunately, studying this is challenging because signals involve complex interactions between behavior, morphology, and physiology, much of which can only be measured in real-time. In Hawaii, male Pacific field cricket song attracts both females and a deadly parasitoid fly. Over the past two decades, there has been a marked increase in signal variation in Hawaiian populations of these crickets, including novel male morphs with distinct mating songs. We capitalize on this rare opportunity to track changes in morph composition over time in a population with three novel morphs, investigating how mate and parasitoid attraction (components of sexual and natural selection) may shape signal evolution. We find dramatic fluctuation in morph proportions over the three years of the study, including the arrival and rapid increase of one novel morph. Natural and sexual selection pressures act differently among morphs, with some more attractive to mates and others more protected from parasitism. Collectively, our results suggest that differential protection from parasitism among morphs, rather than mate attraction, aligns with recent patterns of phenotypic change in the wild.

For herbivorous insects with a broad diet breadth, host plant identity can influence larval development by either accelerating or delaying growth. For some species of Lepidoptera, the number of larval instars varies depending on the host plant's identity. Fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea, Drury) is a polyphagous herbivore that feeds on over 450 host plants worldwide. Of the 2 morphotypes (red- and black-head) of fall webworm, the number of instars for the red-head fall webworms has not been characterized. Given its broad diet breadth, fall webworm developmental stages may vary with plant identity. We investigated whether host plant identity affected the number of instars observed during red-head fall webworm development. We measured the head capsules of over 6,000 fall webworm larvae reared on 6 different plants commonly eaten by fall webworms in Colorado. We modeled head capsule widths as Gaussian mixture models, with a Gaussian distribution that corresponded to each instar. We show that our red-head fall webworms varied in number of instars depending on the identity of their host plant upon which they fed. We found that red-head fall webworm exhibited 7 instars on 5 of the host plants and 8 instars on 1 host plant that we studied. Our results for the number of instars for red-head fall webworm are consistent with reports of the number of instars for black-head fall webworm. Our research provides insight into the influence of host plant identity on fall webworm development, which can be used to advance lab and field research of this species.

Ecological transitions across salinity boundaries have led to some of the most important diversification events in the animal kingdom, especially among fishes. Adaptations accompanying such transitions include changes in morphology, diet, whole-organism performance, and osmoregulatory function, which may be particularly prominent since divergent salinity regimes make opposing demands on systems that maintain ion and water balance. Research in the last decade has focused on the genetic targets underlying such adaptations, most notably by comparing populations of species that are distributed across salinity boundaries. Here, we synthesize research on the targets of natural selection using whole-genome approaches, with a particular emphasis on the osmoregulatory system. Given the complex, integrated and polygenic nature of this system, we expected that signatures of natural selection would span numerous genes across functional levels of osmoregulation, especially salinity sensing, hormonal control, and cellular ion exchange mechanisms. We find support for this prediction: genes coding for V-type, Ca2+, and Na+/K+-ATPases, which are key cellular ion exchange enzymes, are especially common targets of selection in species from six orders of fishes. This indicates that while polygenic selection contributes to adaptation across salinity boundaries, changes in ATPase enzymes may be of particular importance in supporting such transitions.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) causes exertional dyspnea and is important for its effect on quality of life, diagnostic confusion with exercise-induced asthma, and health care resource utilization. There is no validated patient-reported outcome measure specific to EILO. OBJECTIVE: We sought to develop, validate, and define a minimal clinically important difference for a patient-reported outcome measure to be used with adolescents and young adults with EILO. METHODS: A multidisciplinary group created a preliminary measure, modified by a 10-member participant focus group, with 20 items scored along a 5-point Likert scale. A subsequent cohort of participants recruited from a clinic, aged 12 to 21 years, with confirmed EILO by continuous laryngoscopy during exercise testing (1) completed the measure at 3 points in time over 28 days and (2) provided anchoring data in the form of a daily exercise log and categorical self-assessments of clinical improvement. Thirty additional participants without exertional dyspnea served as controls. RESULTS: Two hundred nineteen subjects with mild to severe EILO participated in the exploratory factor analysis, which identified 7 factors within the preliminary outcome measure. After a process of item reduction, a 12-item metric with a total score ranging from 0 to 48 was developed. Mean scores of patients with EILO and healthy controls at baseline were 28.8 ± 7.4 and 4.5 ± 7.4, respectively. A minimal clinically important difference of 6 was determined by comparison of index change with changes in categorical self-assessments of improvement. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first patient-reported outcome measure specifically designed for adolescents and young adults with EILO.

This study examined relationships between temperature, precipitation, geo-topography, and the spring phenology of Fuji and Hongro apple cultivars along spatial gradients across South Korea. Phenology data was gathered from 2011 to 2014 in 42 uniformly managed research orchards which span a range in climate, latitude, and elevation. We used linear models and spatially explicit forecasts to study apple phenology under climate change scenarios. Given dry winters and complex terrain in South Korea, we hypothesized that, in addition to temperature, precipitation and geo-topographic factors influence apple phenology. We also expected responses to climate variation to be similar between (spatial) and within (temporal) orchards, given the controlled conditions and the use of apple clones in this study. With other factors held constant, phenological sensitivity ranged from - 3.2 to - 3.4 days °C-1 for air temperature and - 0.5 to - 0.6 days cm-1 for March precipitation in a combined model. When modeled without temperature, phenology changed by up to 10 days over the full range in March precipitation. Spring temperatures and precipitation in March had very little cross-correlation (r < 0.05), suggesting these patterns are independent; however, in a combined model including temperature, predicted changes in precipitation over the next 80 years have only a small impact on future apple phenology. Combining the best models with climate forecasts for South Korea, spring phenology continues to occur earlier over the next 80 years, mostly due to warming temperatures but with strong variation between regions. This suggests regionally specific climate change adaptation strategies are needed for future apple production in South Korea.

Preference divergence is thought to contribute to reproductive isolation. Ecology can alter the way selection acts on female preferences, making them most likely to diverge when ecological conditions vary among populations. We present a novel mechanism for ecologically dependent sexual selection, termed 'the ecological stage' to highlight its ecological dependence. Our hypothesized mechanism emphasizes that males and females interact over mating in a specific ecological context, and different ecological conditions change the costs and benefits of mating interactions, selecting for different preferences in distinct environments and different male traits, especially when traits are condition dependent. We test key predictions of this mechanism in a sympatric three-spine stickleback species pair. We used a maternal half-sib split-clutch design for both species, mating females to attractive and unattractive males and raising progeny on alternate diets that mimic the specialized diets of the species in nature. We estimated the benefits of mate choice for an indicator trait (male nuptial colour) by measuring many fitness components across the lifetimes of both sons and daughters from these crosses. We analysed fitness data using a combination of aster and mixed models. We found that many benefits of mating with high-colour males depended on both species and diet. These results support the ecological stage hypothesis for sticklebacks. Finally, we discuss the potential role of this mechanism for other taxa and highlight its ability to enhance reproductive isolation as speciation proceeds, thus facilitating the evolution of strong reproductive isolation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in muscle activity in participants with and without low back pain during a side-lying lumbar diversified spinal manipulation. METHODS: Surface and indwelling electromyography at eight muscle locations were recorded during lumbar side-lying manipulations in 20 asymptomatic participants and 20 participants with low back pain. The number of muscle responses and muscle activity onset delays in relation to the manipulation impulse were compared in the 2 pain groups using mixed linear regressions. Effect sizes for all comparisons were calculated using Cohen's d. RESULTS: Muscle responses occurred in 61.6% ± 23.6% of the EMG locations in the asymptomatic group and 52.8% ± 26.3% of the symptomatic group. The difference was not statistically significant but there was a small effect of pain (d = 0.350). Muscle activity onset delays were longer for the symptomatic group at every EMG location except the right side indwelling L5 electrode, and a small effect of pain was present at the left L2, quadratus lumborum and trapezius surface electrodes (d = 0.311, 0.278, and 0.265) respectively. The indwelling electrodes demonstrated greater muscle responses (P ≤ .01) and shorter muscle activity onset delays (P < .01) than the surface electrodes. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed trends that indicate participants with low back pain have less muscle responses, and when muscle responses are present they occur with longer onset delays following the onset of a manipulation impulse.

RESUMO

A method for automatically identifying and classifying hyperactivated spermatozoa trajectories is described. This physiologically-based computerized algorithm captures the motion behavior of sperm during hyperactivation. A novel Minimum Bounding Square Ratio (MBSR) algorithm classifies spermatoza as hyperactivated, transitional or progressive. Classification boundaries were established on selected trajectory data from a single stallion and then tested on random trajectories of sperm from other stallions. MBSR classified sperm in a robust and effective manner.
